How to Write a Crave-Worthy Food Story?
Food is one of life's greatest pleasures, and a writer should write about it in a way that spreads joy with words. What is it that excites you most about the food? The flavors, discovering new cuisines, the culture that inspired it, and so on. You need to ask yourself all these questions to find a unique yet compelling voice.
I’ve been running a local food blog for a while, and here are some tips that help me write a crave-worthy food story.
Involve All Five Senses
Food is all about the senses; make sure you involve them in your writing. Incorporating all five senses in your story can bring it to life, allowing the reader to experience it fully. The crackling of the garlic as it sizzles in a wok, the aromatic lure of fresh thyme, the pillowy, flaky layers of croissant between your fingers—these are some ways you can use sensual aspects to write a good food story.
Identify the Central Pillar of Your Story
Before writing a mouth-watering food story, you need to find the central theme. Know what you’re writing and why you chose this particular dish. Knowing this will inspire you to craft a story around it. For example, if I’m writing a feature on “Grandma’s Apple Pie”, it could be because the cold weather makes me crave warm and comforting food. This will inspire me to choose the words and sentences complimenting this dish, leaving my readers craving some pie.
Make a Tempting Pitch
Just like any article, blog or story, the first few lines are what make or break it. Take your sweet time in crafting a compelling, concrete, and one-of-a-kind introduction. Ensure it's crisp and clear enough to captivate the reader’s attention and make them want to know more. Then, dig deep into the topic.
Stick to Seasonal Topics
Make sure you stick to seasonal recipes because no one would like to read about summer salad during winter. Write a story on soups, stews, hot chocolate, and all the warm, cozy, and comforting foods to lure the people into reading it.
Avoid Cliches
The food blogs on the internet are filled with cliches; make sure your story isn’t. Expand your culinary vocabulary, and stay away from generic words like “yummy”, “amazing”, or “fabulous”.
